The basics

What is the Transport Manager CPC?

The Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (TM CPC) is the qualification you need to be named as the Transport Manager on a Standard National or Standard International Operator's Licence in Great Britain. It's awarded by CILT, and Traffic Commissioners require it before they will approve a nominated Transport Manager.

You'll cover the full CILT syllabus (26 modules for HGV, 24 for PSV), spanning drivers' hours and tachographs, costings, business finance and transport law. There are two exams: multiple choice and a case study.

Choose the route that matches the Operator's Licence you'll be nominated on.

HGV (Road Haulage)

For goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, on Standard National and International Operator's Licences.

PSV (Passenger Transport)

For buses, coaches and other passenger operations. Same exam structure, with content specific to passenger transport.

What students ask before booking a Transport Manager CPC course with us.

Is the online course live, or recorded?
Live. You join a virtual classroom with an MDR tutor at set times and can ask questions as you go, alongside the rest of your cohort. The daytime course runs 2 days a week for 5 weeks (08:45–16:30). The evening course runs 2 evenings a week for 9 weeks (17:30–20:30) plus a full final day, so both give the same 67.5 hours of live tuition. Your tutor marks your case study coursework as you progress, and you sit the exam online on the final day. You also get the full learner portal, audio revision library, flashcards and practice papers.
How long does the Transport Manager CPC take?
Classroom is 10 days including the exam. Online runs for 5 weeks (daytime) or 9 weeks (evening). Distance Learning typically takes 8–10 weeks, and Home Study typically 3–6 months. On both self-paced courses you choose your exam date once you feel ready. CILT results usually follow around six weeks after the exam.
How and when do I sit the exam?
On the Classroom and Online courses, you sit the exam on the final day. Online, Distance Learning and Home Study exams are all sat online. Distance Learning and Home Study learners pick a date that suits them, once they feel ready. We handle the CILT booking on every course.
Is the CILT exam included in the price?
Yes on Classroom (£1,549), Online (£1,099) and Distance Learning (£849): the exam fee and VAT are included in the price shown. Home Study is £437 in total: £130 for the materials plus £307 for the CILT exam.
What's the difference between HGV and PSV CPC?
Both follow the same structure and the same two exams. The difference is the operational content. HGV (road haulage) is for goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on a standard goods Operator's Licence. PSV (passenger transport) is for buses, coaches and other passenger operations. You choose your route at enrolment. If you're unsure, call us.
What's your pass rate?
86% first-time pass on our tutored courses (Classroom and Online). Distance Learning is 60–65% and Home Study 25–30%. Self-study without a live tutor is harder, so if passing first time matters most, a tutored course gives you the best chance.
What happens if I fail the exam?
You can resit either paper individually. Current students can book a paid CILT exam revision session and keep access to the learner portal while they prepare.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Klarna is available at checkout on every course, so you can pay in three interest-free instalments. For Armed Forces personnel we also offer ELCAS-funded training on Classroom, Online and Distance Learning (Provider 5682).
Is the qualification nationally recognised?
Yes. MDR is a CILT-accredited training provider, and the Transport Manager CPC is awarded by CILT. It's the qualification Traffic Commissioners require for a nominated Transport Manager on a Standard Operator's Licence.
