Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Transport Manager CPC qualification?
The Transport Manager CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification required to act as a transport manager for a road haulage or passenger transport operation in the UK. It demonstrates your ability to meet the legal and professional standards for managing transport operations, and is issued by CILT.
Is the course delivered fully online?
Yes. You attend live, tutor-led Zoom sessions on set dates, and both final exams are also taken online under remote invigilation. There is no need to travel — you can study from anywhere in the UK.
What's the difference between the online, classroom and distance learning courses?
All three lead to the same CILT qualification. The online course is live, tutor-led Zoom training over 5 or 9 weeks (£999) — the same teaching as the classroom with no travel. The classroom course is 9 intensive days in person at our Coalville centre (£1,399, includes lunch and parking). Distance learning is self-paced study with 6 months of tutor support (£699) — the most flexible, best if you're confident studying independently. The online and classroom courses have a notably higher pass rate than distance learning because of the live tutor contact.
What topics are covered in the course?
The course covers the full CPC syllabus:
- Legal responsibilities of a transport manager
- Driver hours and tachograph regulations
- Vehicle maintenance and roadworthiness
- Road haulage operations and documentation
- Financial and business management
- Operator licensing and compliance
Do I need any prior experience or qualifications?
No. There are no formal entry requirements and no prior transport experience is needed. The course is designed to take you from the ground up to exam-ready, and many of our delegates start with no industry background. Tutors adapt to each learner's starting point.
What equipment or technology do I need?
You need a computer or laptop with a working webcam and microphone, and a stable internet connection. Sessions run on Zoom. A second screen is helpful but not essential. For the remotely invigilated exams you'll need a quiet room and a webcam, and we send full joining and system requirements before you start.
Should I choose the daytime or evening course?
The daytime course runs two full days a week over 5 weeks and suits people who can commit daytime hours — it's the quickest route to qualifying. The evening course runs two 3.5-hour sessions a week over 9 weeks and is designed around full-time work. The teaching content is identical; the only difference is the schedule and pace. Note that evening courses currently run for road haulage only.
How much study time will I need outside the live sessions?
Alongside the live sessions, most delegates spend a few hours a week on private study — working through the materials, practice questions and case study preparation. The case study exam in particular rewards practice, so we provide past papers and practice sessions, and tutors are on hand between sessions to help.
What happens if I miss a live session?
We understand work and life get in the way. If you miss a session, speak to your tutor — they'll help you catch up on what was covered and make sure you're ready to move on. Because our class sizes are small, tutors can give individual support to anyone who's fallen behind.
What support do I get from tutors outside class hours?
Our tutors are available between sessions by phone, WhatsApp and email to help with practice questions, homework and any topics you're finding difficult. You're not left to work through the harder material alone — support runs throughout the course, right up to your exams.
When do I get access to the course materials?
You get immediate access to the online learner portal as soon as you book, so you can start preparing before your course begins. This includes your study materials, practice questions and interactive flashcards, plus printed and digital materials for the course itself.
Is there an exam? How is it taken?
Yes. The qualification has two exams: a multiple-choice paper (R1) and a case study paper (R2). Both are taken online under remote invigilation, so you sit them from home with no need to attend a test centre.
What happens if I don't pass an exam?
If you don't pass one of the papers first time, you only need to resit the paper you didn't pass, not the whole qualification. Your tutor will help you prepare for the resit. Resit exam fees are payable to CILT — call us on 01530 834 554 and we'll talk you through the process.
How long does it take to complete the course?
The daytime course is 9 training days spread over 5 weeks (two full days a week). The evening course is also 9 days but spread over 9 weeks, with two 3.5-hour sessions per week. Your exam day follows the training.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. On passing both exam papers you receive a Level 3 Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage or Passenger Transport, issued by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). It is recognised by the Traffic Commissioners and accepted on Operator Licence applications.
What is the cost of the course?
The online Transport Manager CPC course costs £999 including VAT and both exam fees. You can pay upfront, spread the cost with Klarna at checkout, or pay by company invoice or BACS — call 01530 834 554 to arrange invoicing.
Can I pay in instalments or get funding?
Yes. You can spread the cost with Klarna at checkout, or pay by company invoice or BACS for employer-funded bookings. If you're a service leaver or ex-forces, the course may be eligible for ELCAS funding (we're an approved provider, 5682). Call 01530 834 554 to discuss the right option.
Can I use this qualification for an O-Licence application?
Yes. The Transport Manager CPC is mandatory for anyone being named as the nominated Transport Manager on a UK Operator Licence (standard national or standard international). This online course gives you the full qualification needed for that role.
Is the online course suitable for passenger transport as well as road haulage?
Yes. We run separate online courses for both Road Haulage and Passenger Transport, each leading to the relevant CILT CPC qualification. Daytime courses are available for both; evening courses currently cover road haulage. Choose your stream when you select your course date.
